Following last week's daylight robbery by a Lincoln visitor, you'd think the locals might have put the gates up and the dogs on patrol. Unfortunately not, and this week another Lincoln member, Kathy Bee, teamed up with Murray Elliot in the Drawn Partners 2-Person Ambrose to make off with the spoils. Their winning score was so far clear of the field that daylight wasn't second — it was somewhere back in the next paddock looking for lost sheep….
For the middle of July, the weather was about as kind as a Canterbury farmer could hope for. With barely a frost in sight and conditions more reminiscent of lambing season than mid-winter, a strong field turned out and enjoyed a thoroughly pleasant wander around the Greendale fairways. There was plenty of good golf, a few shots that would struggle to get past the electric fence, and the usual collection of stories that improved considerably by the time players reached the clubhouse.
The day's entertainment rolled seamlessly into the evening, with night golf providing plenty of laughs before members gathered to watch the All Blacks put Ireland away. Credit must go to the one or two local traitors who fronted up in green — a brave effort in hostile territory, although they were about as popular as a southerly during haymaking. Thanks to Garron, Diane and their teams of assistants for organising!
Meanwhile, the Reid-Johnson 4BBB Trophy has a new home. Blair Hopkins and Hugh MacPhee claimed the chocolates after defeating the father-and-son pairing of Garron and Ethan Hawker in the final. The Hawkers fought hard, but Blair and Hugh were steadier than a well-set irrigator and ultimately got the job done, earning themselves bragging rights and the silverware for the year ahead. Well done guys!!
Tuesday Golf results: 14 July
On Tuesday a small group faced the expected gales to hold their weekly games. The wind wasn’t too bad although the scores were not great: 18 hole winner: Bill Austin with a nett 73 from Kath Adams nett 79. The 9 hole winner from three players was Maaike Kikstra Faber with a nett 39. On Saturday the women played a Qualifying round for the Bronze Championship and a LGU Stroke round. The latter was won by the only woman silver player, Megumi Nagayama with an outstandingly good round of 80, nett 68. The Bronze players are still battling it out to decide the draw for that event: so far scores are not great!
